Making a decision and making it stick

Do you find that you often second guess yourself?

Do you think about all the ways you could have done something differently?

Making a decision stick is often harder than making the decision itself, especially when it’s something you aren’t sure about. Whilst being alert and informed can help, it’s not the only way.

It’s important to remember to breathe and take everything one step at a time. You don’t need to always have the answer right away, it’s often better to take your time and think about it, especially in high stress situations. You don’t want to be caught out by making the right decision at the wrong time and finding out you could have made everything easier if you’d waited. Making a timeframe for when you need the answer is okay, but just make sure you aren’t leaving it until the last minute. Making a rush decision in a short time can be easy, but the afterthought can often leave you wondering about what you could have done differently.

The road less travelled may seem like a good idea at the time, you don’t want to follow the same train of thought as everyone else, but it’s not always the only option, nor is it always the better option. Sometimes, particularly with hard decisions, relying on the experience of others can make a decision seem less troublesome. Asking for help and advice can help you make the right decision for you. Everyone is different, but everyone has something they are expert in. Utilise this expertise to see how they might choose to do something and use that to help you.

Personally, I often find that I am making decisions frequently in my everyday life that are influenced by my surroundings and my upbringing. As a child, I watched my family make decisions that seemed like a good idea at the time but turned out to be terrible. I learned quickly to make sure I take my time with decisions and think two or three steps ahead to where it might lead me. Though it seems like it might be tedious, knowing where you want to end up, influences the path you take. Focusing on one step at a time is crucial, but don’t get stuck behind a wall.

You might find that the path you take has many obstacles, don’t be afraid to make it into a personal challenge. It might seem like you don’t have the ability to work through a problem but facing the development head on and using your own abilities to strengthen your resolve lets you make the decision work for you. It’s easy to let an obstacle push you in another direction but remember that you chose this direction for a reason. It’s not always as hard as it might seem.

You will run into a couple of bumps along the road, but don’t sweat the little things. Some decisions, like what to eat for breakfast, just don’t matter in the big picture. Save your energy for the choices that do matter, and don’t second-guess yourself over unimportant things.

If it’s something you are really struggling with, go with your gut. If your intuition is telling you not to do something, trust it. Humans have an ingrained response to situations that may not be quite right. If it feels weird or off, it probably is and even if it’s not, it’s always better to be sure. Look for more information and try to find what you might have been worried about. If it turns out to be nothing, at least you know you can protect yourself in the long run.
