The perils of procrastination and how to overcome them
“I’ll do this later”.
“It’s too hard”.
“Let me check Facebook for 5 minutes”.
How many of us have said one of these statements instead of doing what we need to do? I know I have.
Let’s look at excuses from another perspective:
“I need to make sure this is perfect.”
“I’m a perfectionist. Everything has to be looked over by me first before being sent off.”
Whichever way you look at it, you are not getting the work done. Those who procrastinate may do so because they feel the task ahead is too daunting or they’re afraid of their work being criticised or told they are wrong.
There are two ways that may help you to overcome procrastination:
- Break the task down.
Whether your project is buying a new car, painting a house or planning a wedding, the key to achievement is to create a list of what needs to be done and cross out each ‘mini-task’ one by one.
The satisfaction of crossing one task out at a time will surely keep you staying on track and keep you focused. Writing things down will illustrate and even simplify the task ahead.
Take it one day at a time or one section at a time and you will get there.
2. Prepare for setbacks.
Once you have written your project into smaller tasks, be prepared for obstacles along the way. These obstacles may be mental: “Today, I’m just not feeling it”, or other tasks that get put on your desk. These and many other distractions may be in your path, but you will have to keep focused and fight the resistance to put off the task at hand further.
True, there are some deadlines that can’t be put aside, but if you are well prepared for any setbacks, you can avoid any further procrastination.
Everyone procrastinates. Sometimes, the pressure of meeting a last minute deadline makes us push ourselves. However, when working in a team, procrastination can hold everything up and can cause further stress or anxiety. If you wish to overcome procrastination, the two ways described above may help create efficiencies.
